How Not To Gain Weight Over The Holidays

Most people struggle to avoid weight gain over the holidays, which is why there is a sudden explosion of fitness DVDs and weight-loss products available on the market in the New Year, as people decide they need to lose a few pounds. It is possible to prevent weight gain in the first place, though, so that you don’t have to bother splashing out on the latest fad diet ‘bibles’ and exercise DVDs.

The first thing you need to do is remind yourself that just because you have Christmas and New Year’s celebrations to enjoy, you don’t need to go overboard. It can be hard to resist the temptation to gorge yourself on Christmas Day when you’re surrounded by scrumptious food and everyone is partaking of it. However, if you don’t restrain yourself you will find that once the holidays are over you will be a few pounds heavier and miserable as a result.

Thus, you need to plan ahead so that you can avoid a situation where you’re surrounded by lots of calorific food that has to be eaten. If you only buy what you need and try to stick to healthier options, rather than stocking up on nibbles and snack foods, you should find it easier to avoid consuming an excessive number of calories. After all, it is taking on board more calories than your body can burn that leads to weight gain.

It’s not only food you have to think about, since alcohol is made up of empty calories that will make it harder for you to stay within your calorie allowance. You can still enjoy a drink or two, but if you stock up on bottles of wine and cans of lager that none of your guests bother to drink; you are the one who will end up drinking them. Getting drunk every night certainly isn’t going to help your efforts to avoid weight gain.

As well as food and drink, you also need to pay attention to your activity levels. Over the holidays it can be hard to motivate yourself to get up from the couch and do some exercise when it is cold and miserable outside. However, you need to find something to do that gets you moving, as burning extra calories means you won’t have to feel as guilty if you’ve eaten more than you should have.

It might be a challenge not to gain weight over the holidays, but it will be even more of a challenge to lose weight if you pile on the pounds. It is therefore worth making the effort to keep your calories in check and to do some exercise.
